Review: “Dear Son” By Andrew Patience (AP)

“Dear son” is a piece written by Andrew Patience a poet , writer and an OAP.

This poem is a letter from a mother to her son yet unborn . Her opening is knitted with uncertainties of his suns or moon, of not knowing who the father would be but she is certain that irregardless he is in for some loving.

She was able to capture the ideal unconditional love of a mother with lines such as “I have loved you before time and space “ even though she hasn’t met him.

It interests me that she suggests that he be a better version of she and his father, own his life and build self esteem no one can break. She also reminds him of the uncertainties of life , to live his life as his and let her life be his guide.

The poet does not forget to remind her son to remember who he is because in a world full of opinion, ingratitude, betrayal and selfishness that is the best he can do for himself but she hopes to be there to hold his hands through it all.

She encourages him to be good and true , to serve, to be the spark and the light for it is of that same stuff he became.

This poem in my opinion was a free verse for its rhymes where inconsistent. She also implored the use of various literature devices but succeeded in keeping it simple and sweet. It accompanying music suited the piece.

The tone of the poet was that of pure love but I must confess that I will have been perfect if more emotion was injected into it.

Patience did a beautiful choice and I hope her son gets to hear this.
