Review: “Dear Son” By Andrew Patience (AP)

AP has become a pacesetter to the fast growing female poetry community in Jos and Nigeria. She’s a co-founder of Custodians of African Literature, and is currently in the USA for an Atlas Corp Fellowship.

Dear Son is a poem and letter to the poet’s yet-to-be-conceived child advising him on the path to tread as he grows.
The poem begins in Yoruba, translated as:
“My child my advice to you is:
Do not follow bad friends
Be of good behaviour
Respect your parents and those older than you
Don’t depend on inheritance
Be content with whatever you have
The beginning of the downfall of a man is: Too much love for money and women
Doing all this will bring Progress/success to you.”

The poet tries to create balance in what she is telling her child. For him to understand that life is not a bed of roses, but that he will face dark times and challenges too. But in all of these challenges, she will be there to guide him as a mother.
