Review: Reincarnation by Bamvi ft. Phil Dobson.

Reincarnation” a poem by Bamvy is a soulful poem about his niece named Jemima first identified in Philip Dobson’s intro verse to the piece “Jemima you took so long but thank God now I’ve found you”. It begins with his confirmation that he had lost faith in getting his “lost blood” back which I suspect to be his mother ( I may be wrong) ” in the valley of thorns common it is for faith to prick, this I deserve, yes, yet I beget a rose”. Comparing his faith to that of a rose which grows on thorns yet survives.

His ability to use metaphors is pleasant, as seen in ” those small white shiny stars, furnaces of a blazing love passed down to my famished heart”, which also reveals he had been hungry, or aching to have his ” blood lost” back. Metaphors also found in “your face is the sun, goodbye dear night”, as he bids all traces of pain caused by his loss goodbye. The dominant theme is love. Love from mother to child as seen in ” how emotions slapped your mother when she mixed elixir of pain and joy to push forth this ounce of you”. This also contains personification in “emotions slapped your mother”.

His love for her pushes him to wish she would become a poet in future, ” touch souls with poems never told”. Another theme identified is hope, her coming brought hope to him and he renders prayers that she ” smell God as I smell him from your breath”, “walk with him with these tiny feet”, these show his intimacy with God.

The soundtrack sits perfectly with the poem and has a very convincing aura. Beautifully written, the song at the beginning keeps its listeners trapped to want to listen till the end. There’s also a humorous and accentuated appraisal of Jemima at the end. The poem is a good listen for everyone, old and young as the diction is simple and easy to relate to.
