Review: “Morticians” by Sango ft. GrandSun

As a yoruba boy, you should see the joy on my face when I first heard this poem. I was happy the Yoruba version of poetry was used, but also reminisced of the message of Sango, the poet. Sango is the name of the “god of fire” in Yoruba, I guess this poet, Sango is spitting fire as words too.

Sango speaks about our neglect for culture and tradition. We’ve stopped following paths left by our forefathers claiming civilization is here to stay. He reminds the youths that if we don’t act right now, generations to come will have nothing to call their culture or tradition.

Grandsun passed his apt message using pun, alliteration of letter “M” and rhymes. They all bring the beauty of the poem to life.

The speaker speaks about the terrorism in the northern part of Nigeria, the effect it had on, what has been done to tackle it, how long will it continue until it stops and what is left of us.

“Humanitarian aid diverted for personal gain.” He also speaks on the needy needing to be fed and some so called “helpers” diverting their provisions for social gain.

“This is for 35 years of service. *poof *disappear.” Pensioners and the struggle they face. After years of serving the country, they’re still denied their rights when due. How then will the country grow?

“Charity starts at home so corruption is only plain, fair.” This is the most catchy part of the poem, to me. There are lot of questions needing answers as to why corruption rips us apart. Who raised the corrupt ones?

“Homosexuality is now our next door reality.” The LGBT community members are confidently seated on this table. I can’t imagine myself being attracted to my fellow man. Culture that Sango spoke about at the beginning is asking the questions here.

“Love is now sexuality explore.” We live in a society where sex is the new love. “Welcome to the days where Toyota makes the accord.” A society that sees wealth to be what you drive has a generation of confused youths living in it.

The poem has both speakers in a reflective mood. Even thought I still wonder why the title “MORTICIANS,” there are lots of questions needing answers and lots of answers needing to be questioned. It is a worthy listen. Credit to the speakers, and to Ruddapoet who put this piece on his “Handwriting EP”
