Review: “Is This The Moment?” By Bash Ft. Aysia
Is this the moment is a spoken word poem written by Basiru Amuneni (Bash) featuring Aysia. Bash is a poet who is resident in Abuja but from Nassarawa and Benue. He is the author to a collection of poems titled ‘There’s a lunatic in every town’.
In the country where we live, questions are always asked as to the method of governance, the way of life, the problems that arise everyday and the other act of men that arises each day.
The 5 minutes poem outlines questions that centralizes on Africa and Nigeria. The poet employs the use of form, tone, mood, imagery, irony, rhyme, metaphor and all other figures of speech as related to poetry.
The poet repeats the question “Is this the moment we’ve all been waiting for?” so it sinks into the mind of his listener. Repetition for poet’s such as Bash is his main tool, he twirls around it and drops his rhythm like confetti on a runway. One can relate this to all poems.
Enunciation for Bash is a strength as his words never struggle for clarity.
“For the heart of Africa to beat again” is a heavy metaphor that can relate to Nigeria as the giant of Africa. It is also perceived as an ambiguity.
Poets like Bash like to take on society as his theme to point out the problems we all know and doesn’t directly answer the issues. Whenever the poet let his society influences him, he/she relates to it as an apple on a tree and that is what ‘Is this the moment’ furnishes as a piece of spoken word poem.
