8 Silver Herrings
Cousin
I watched him walk into the restaurant, looking like an angel that just popped out of heaven. And in that instant every sense of reasoning I had evaporated from me. I know guys with long dreads look nice and hot, but he looked like a Gucci hamburger wrapped in Nike mayonnaise with sprinkled gold icings.
He stood at the door, the light that flushed from behind him was radiant, I thought this was Christ’s ascension 2.0. My mind slow motioned his steps towards me, this is definitely a movie. He was still a few steps away from the entrance when someone tapped me awake from my day dream, I startled!! It was him, I looked back again towards the door and realised that I was just thinking slow. “Oh! hi, I’m so sorry I startled, my mind was somewhere else. I’m Lardo, I stay just at the next bend across the street. I’m 19 and I know I’m talking fast so I’ll stop now and let you speak,” I ended with a big grin.
He was dazed. He passed a confused stare from the side of his eyes and smirked. I scratched my head knowing i had screwed up. I was nervous, confused as to whether to sit or keep standing. ” Well,” he started, his voice was an echo from a sanctuary. It was deep and soft in the right proportions and if I heard this voice in my dreams I’d think its the holy spirit. “My name is Dorian, I was sent to you by Grandmother Janice, I’m your distant cousin, the one mentioned in the will.”
I couldn’t stop smiling. it was obviously becoming a fake white smile but I kept smiling and said nothing. My gaze was fixed at the salt shaker on the table. ” Lardo, are you alright”? he asked, a little concerned. “Yes cousin, I’m good, I’m fine and perfectly alright thanks for asking cousin,”,I said with so much stress on the word cousin. “Tell me all about Grandmother Janice and the whole will reading,” I said grinning again.
