On other things

Arigatōgozaimasu

In all things, give up
or thanks

Whoever invented gratitude looked
up first. Tried to see the reasons
written in the sky, with bird ink.

We’re black because we looked
too hard, because melanin is a
result of being too grateful, a gift.

My jaw interrupts my speech with
a click. Open too wide and it locks.
Giving thanks with a locked jaw is wild.

In all things, we do not know why.
My neighbours say thank you for breakfast
I say thank you before I eat a heart break

Yet, we all look up, we glory in our colours
Tie our shortcomings to a grateful balloon
and hope the sun breaks it open for us

In all things, whether we break it or it breaks us
Arigatōgozaimasu.
