It didn’t have to go this way

we look to God and pledge him a sacrifice
when nothing has gone wrong and no one has sinned
we’ve learned that the good and bad will pay the price

so, blasphemy or not we choose to rescind.
we engage in faithless prayers and wild plea
while the decalogue, in our minds we have pinned

we are told it is the lord’s way, his decree
and he would give us grace in our time of need
we are not convinced, we doubt but still agree

and in time of need, to the same God we’d plead
in screams and reverent requests we would ask
we’d quote scriptures that say nothing would impede

right there in our own suffering we would bask
none of that glory will we ever unmask
