He brought out a black little box, the type men used to house engagement rings. My heart jumped and lurched in motion. He told me to relax, it had a silver chain with a ruby pendant. It was the most beautiful piece I’ve ever seen. He took it out and told me to bend over, I raised my hair up in a bun as he clasped it round my neck. My hands made for it and kept fondling the pendant between my fingers. He looked me deep in the eyes, told me I was beautiful, and that the necklace suited me well. I think I said thank you a thousand times before I realized it. Feeling stupid, I suddenly felt patched and dry. I quickly grabbed the glass if water he had in his hands and took a few sips.
