Reply to Linda Gregg’s ‘Asking for directions’

Dear Linda,
My story is like yours
Though a journey not by train
But a road map into ourselves .
Our eyes met, for the first time, across the hall
As we ate in the dining of the university .
I stopped seeing the food as he too did .
Without a word, we left our food
Met outside, held hands as if drawn by hypnotism .
With dry voices.
All we said were our names
What we didn’t have to say
Was the most important
It was love without explanation .
I was to meet him in the lecture hall,
Then the lights went off !
I ran out in the dark, crossing the large field,
Till I felt another running ,in the opposite direction.
I screamed his name
And he caught me, in a tight embrace.
Nothing separated us ever again
Until that day, many years later
He was in his navy uniform
And was shot .
His twin sister told me
He died with a message for me .
I still love him
In my minds eyes .
