Now We Know Better

I watched my dad keenly as he paced through the foyer. It troubles me every time he does that, because it meant something bad has happened or his about to happen. “Baba is everything alright?” There was no reply. “Baba you look worried.” I wasn’t ready for his next reply, “quit pestering me Abdul, don’t you know that you’re part of the reason why I am worried?”

Instantly I realised my mistake. Baba works as a civil servant and works with the ministry of Education. He has not been paid his monthly salary for a few months now. It also affected my mum because she was a teacher with the state primary education board. Thank God Baba inherited our house from his father, we would have been thrown out by an impatient landlord by now. No landlord in Jos would be this patient.

Mama called out to me, “Abdul!” and I quickly followed the sound of her sonorous voice. She always talked like she was about to sing a song. “Can’t you see how Agitated your father is? If you don’t want to go through the same fate, you must study hard. And please do not read any educational course.” I understood what that meant and I quickly answered. Most of the politicians children go to school abroad, and if I wanted to be respected, I have to study hard, and it must be Medicine or Engineering. I’m expected to do better, so I don’t go through this same peril that my parents are experiencing at the hands of the government. “Now go and get your sister from the neighbours house.” And I ran out breathlessly…
