For My President When He Dies

The hawk watched from the branch of a tree-
At a chick it wanted to prey on
Then it lowered his wings and floated like the sea
And embraced the bird who never saw to run.

He lifted itself like a blanket of air
To ricochet out of sight.
The chick had screamed to break and tear
Away from this lost victorious fight.

With night came dawn and the cat found to feed
The sharks and water beasts and eagle in the east
In a whirl shuffle to mix up the seeds
Worms, termites and rodents added to the list.

And others were left to hold the hand of the land
But this land was something you don’t just take by the hand.
