Barricades and Fences

For me to build a fence i will need a neighbour
From across this heap of tortured bricks
To send disgust ahead in the morning
That feigns remorse to cool these grudges.
We never talk about these fences
We talk through other people’s fumes
Throw them as punches across our faces
Curse the boulders that refused to fall for each.
Nothing can be better than a wall
The type to keep back your neighbour’s knocking
The type that two can’t pass abreast
And no builder can force repair
But everything between finds a hiding.
So there won’t come a morning
When we would sit feet to feet
And talk about the past confusion
And calmly shake our hands in war
And claim the same friendship we hate
When there’s no such thing as mending walls.
