To Tochi and Ola

it’s good the sun sets
but it rises to make mornings
to make beginnings.
no one has figured out
where it goes at night
but at least somewhere
in some distant place
they say it visits them
and eats with them
and leaves them to come home.

it’s good to be a pauper
it feels good to be air.
I pray you do not end
I pray you do not commit
yourself to chains
whether it is worry
whether it is pain.
it’s good to be alive first
loving and dying are easy
but staying in it is hard.
