Picture Six

We flew too fast
And the wings got broken
Eaten by wild humans
Who saw life as properties
Solely to be owned by them alone
I once took a flight
Makurdi to Lagos
With a little infant
All for seven naira
And a flight
Where the aircraft captain was clapped for
As Nigeria’s best
From Lagos to New York
For one hundred and six naira ticket
When salaries were five hundred and seven nairas a month.
The air wonder crashed
And became an elephant
That never could fly again
Now we hop from house to house
From hand to mouth
Waiting only
For rapture
