Should we tell them?

it is always like this,
at 5 we are scared
not of fire but the heat
and lukewarm may never do.
at 12, we fear
not the burn but the scar
that imagination creates.
on the morning of 18
and the evening of 19
we are face to face with
that fire we feared.
our teen returns with the weight
of two people. nobody told her
how to or how not to.
