Almajiri (Al muhajir)

The street schooled more than was bargained
The learner learnt only to beg
Learning came faster to the legs
And off they sped, to the street class;
As marabací.

Soon like river they flood and flow
Skin separated from its skin
In the parlor of dirt littered
Little fingers with nails to scratch
The scarred face of earth.

There goes a can of rusted dreams
Tablets after tablets they count,
Voices strangled by their hunger,
Necks grow longer, the street consumes,
More in their numbers.
