Poetry: Nobody Woke Us Up!!

His love was like that of Romeo’s
And I was more naive than Juliet
We me at a time of callowness
In a world where everyone was busy except us.

He was an ugly duckling,
Pecking on the glory that was yet to come,
He was greedy but generous
And the way he loved me made him perfect
In our eyes.

With days turning into nights
We feasted in ways only parents should
I let a seed sprout in me
I wasn’t afraid the world would know
But he was and said it with pride.

That man of the dark corner said I owed him
While placing the little keg on my lap
“Drink a cup full,” he said
But any more than that, tomorrow may never come.

They say we make the best decisions in our sleep.
I drank as much as I wanted,
So did Kunle out of his undying love.
We held each other close with smiles and lust in his eyes.

And when the sun smiled on Ring Road at morn
Our loveless lifeless bodies lay for all to see
In our pool of mess and unbelief
Nobody would have listened to me
And this time Nobody woke us up.

The lights came up and I woke up,
I will dream this dream again, I prayed.
But next time, wiser and older
And without a Kunle to mess things up.
