How Prayer Works: Responses

God’s joke

God has a sense of humour
When it shows up, it shows off
On odd hours; like when we pray
When silence must not be broken
By any words or chords
When lowly hearts stand contrite
When tightly shut eyes
Threaten to peak open
Times we cannot conjure a laugh
When butts try hard to stifle a fart
God has a sense of timing
You can never second guess
He distils from heaven, it diffuses to earth
This jokes to us
As knocked knees knelt to the ground
In close quarters like conjoined twins
Me and my other half
As you would imagine two siblings
One stuttered to say the words
We both gave brief ascending coughs
We knew God’s harp was playing
We broke the revered solemnity
When our voices sliced the air with loud resounding laughter
