A day i remember

I was enjoying the sting of the December cold as I washed my father’s clothes outside the house in the front yard. I had just returned from the hospital and thought it best to wash the used clothes immediately. Tomorrow, I will take new ones to him, I surmised.

My friend and neighbour Christy came to check up on me. It was her birthday, and despite the despair I felt due to my dad’s illness, I still remembered to get her some yoghurt. My dad will get better, there was nothing to worry about. Why shouldn’t I celebrate a simple birthday with my friend?

I heard the ambulance and saw my uncle opening the gate. From there onward, everything became blank. I couldn’t hear anything, couldn’t feel anything, I just kept on walking; out of the gates and into the streets.
