Inside the many verses

2011 POST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION VIOLENCE

It was on a windy morning
The city was already mourning
I dodged devotion, to wake up late
I woke to Muslims running back to hide
The mosque was in flames and heads may roll
They destroyed Alfanla’s car
Chased him to the hostel, swore to kill
“Lailahaillah, ” he was ready for his blood to spill
Took countless pleas to save his life
We shivered and quivered
Our mates were ready to cast
Claiming people were dead in the town
I felt for boys from the core north, they looked a clown
A rosary was on my neck but I was nervous
Chose to be a catholic cause I know the rites
They vowed to come back
So we lived in uncertainty
Mum almost had an attack
Kafanchan was bleeding but Kaduna was safe
We were stuck for over a week
Belief for life was getting weak
Until the government intervened
Policemen shielded the school buses
Even at that, soldiers searched us all
At every checkpoint that we got to
In Kaduna, We all slept at Airforce base
To the government, we were a special case
Only united with our families the next day.
I may have not been here to write today
My pen may have died with nothing to say
I know the smell of war
I know why I choose peace
